Title: My identity

Blog Entry: To all readers out there, perhaps you may be wondering how I ended up in Singapore when the vast majority of overseas Cambodians decided to settle in the USA, Australia, France & other western countries. To begin with, I was born and bred in Singapore. Dad was from Singapore while Mom was from the state of Perak in Malaysia (Singapore & Malaysia used to be one country prior to the separation of Singapore in 1965). Mom was posted to work in a hospital in Singapore as a physiotherapist (the same hospital dad worked in as a doctor). Then on 9 August 1965 Singapore was kicked out of the Malaysian federation & our then prime minister cried while addressing the new nation (this was telecast on TV). As a result of the separation, mom became a Singapore citizen. The rest of the story is pretty obvious ... dad & mom met in the hospital, fell in love, got married in 1968, bong proh born in 1969 & I was born in 1971. Then the baby factory stopped operating because the government at that time had a policy which said "2 is enough". I am therefore an ethnic Chinese, born in Singapore and holding a Singapore passport & pink identity card. How did the Cambodian connection come into the picture? You will see more in my next posting.
