CAMBODIANS IN CRISIS
A Study of the Cambodian Population
In Long Beach, CA
5. Summary of Key Issues
From data compiled and from numerous interviews with Cambodian community leaders, four main issues have surfaced: (1) Economic: especially poverty, welfare, job access and training; (2) Mental health: particularly domestic violence, PTSD and depression; (3) Leadership: including the need for mentors, advocates, and cross generational/cultural communication; (4) Church/Mission: an exodus of young adults (23-33 year olds) from the church , lack of theological training and seminary access, lack of second generation pastors, a hesitancy to network with other denominations, and no second generation (English speaking) Cambodian churches.
Many of these challenges are not unique to most of the immigrant experiences in the United States. The issues are very real but also present great opportunities for the church, as outlined below.
